As the subject of many surrealist paintings, sky, sea and shore lie between abstraction and the concrete: concrete in their materiality, abstract in the purity of their space. Created for the Dapeng Xiyong sub-venue of the 2019 Shenzhen–Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture, this installation is a spatial experiment on the paradox of “there and shore”.
“There” and “shore” exist in two parallel spaces, each keeping watch over the other – a pair destined to stay apart, like many ordinary moments in life: leaving in order to return, letting go in order to receive. The work does not define anyone’s future; it simply sets up a field in which visitors reflect on their past, present and future within an inverted, abstract space-time – a unique space that pushes back against busy everyday life and the sameness of a thousand cities.
A five-metre-long concave mirror lies on the beach at the line of the horizon. Concave mirrors invert the image: as people approach, the order of sky, shore and sea flips, and the sky is brought close at hand. Under endless reflection and refraction, architecture dissolves into the landscape, and as visitors move around the elongated mirror they seem to sink into a boundless sky.
