Stone Chandelier石灯

Natural stone is rarely hung from a ceiling: its weight and brittleness make people feel unsafe. This marble pendant lamp – “Floating Pavilion” – sets out to challenge that impression, playing the heaviness of the stone against the lightness of a form floating in the air.

Triangulated marble panels open like a flower, or like a pavilion suspended overhead. Walking beneath it, one senses the weight of the stone pressing on the space, while the downturned folded edges enclose a sheltering, inclusive room below. The lamp is intended for spaces 3–4 m high; hung in groups at different heights, the pieces gain a stronger sense of movement and rhythm.

Each lamp measures 1.8 × 1.4 m and is made of 2 cm marble panels on a steel frame. It weighs 90 kg and conceals eight halogen lamps. Design and fabrication took four months, and the piece was built by Beijing Tiancheng Yingliang Stone Co.
