Dali Transformer Park Theater大理变压公园剧场

On the south-west side of Erhai Lake, at the edge of Dali's ancient walled town, an abandoned transformer factory has been turned into a theatrical park that invites a free reading of Dali's past, present and future. The old workshops, storage sheds and offices now hold a theater, multi-sensory art spaces and new-media dining. The factory's assembly hall is the tallest building in the old town: from its roof, Cangshan Mountain lies to the west and Erhai Lake to the east. Ramps and platforms link the stepped roofs into an industrial landscape that answers the distant mountains and lake, its shifting scales echoing the massing of local Bai vernacular houses.

The site offered a rare chance to break with the big-box theater. Here the theater becomes a "theatrical district" built around the idea of a field, assembled from four existing buildings, with the former street between them serving as cross-stage access. Borrowing Lewis Mumford's line that cities are museums and museums are cities, the design swaps city and theater: the city is a theater, and the theater is a city. Stages appear under the eaves, on the roofs, at high windows and in boxes projecting from the façades.

Inside, the concrete frame is cut by light and urban tension into industrial fragments, gathered into four themed zones that can work separately or together. Suspended spaces thread through all four, giving audiences a second, overhead view of the show. Outside, cantilevered corridors, rooftop platforms and ramps form a winding promenade for wandering, impromptu performance and slow afternoons in a café overlooking Cangshan and Erhai.
